Today in class we started off by taking notes on characterization. We took notes on direct characterization and indirect characterization and examples from the text. We took notes on what STEAL stands for and we actually took examples from the text. This was a nice exercise to jog my memory on characterization. We ended the class by continuing to read the book.  MY overall day was great. Classes were good.

Today in class we began reading the book “Fences”. We got to take turns Reading each characters roles. The book was actually pretty funny, we had a couple laughs.  Today in class we had 6 discussion questions about the title of the play we are about to read called “FENCES “. We discussed what it means to have physical and metaphorical fences in one’s life. The play we are about to read it directed in the 1950s, and during those times I believe that African Americans had a hard life and had many fences. They were faced with identify, lack of education, segregation, lack of job opportunities, financial unstable. Throughout these struggles African Americans had no choice but to build metaphorical fences such as putting a shield up for protection, keeping others out, being cautious on who they can trust and more. I learned a lot already about this play just by annotating the title. Overall today, school was pretty good, it went by pretty fast so that’s good. My classes were good and the overall mood of today was good.

Today in class we went over the I want a husband discussion questions. We discussed further into what it means to have expected gender roles. The expected roles of women in the 1979s were to cook, clean, take care of the children, wash clothes, basically household duties. Men were expected to do heavy hard work, take out trash, and more. Therese stereotypes really shaped society back then. As of todays society you still kinda see a little bit of that but now it’s more as a choice rather than and expected demand for women. This topic was very interesting and I learned a lot from it.

Reflection conclusion: From this excersise I’ve learned that the social norms of men are usually having to deal with doing men things. It’s shown me that the social norms of men and their gender roles don’t have always have to be stereotyped. Men can act outside of their social norms. But it also shows you that their social norms are to be expected. Just as women are expected to cook and clean around the house and not do hard work.

Today was a fairly easy class period. We took our first vocabulary quiz using the words from the two kind story. The quiz was really easy but that’s because I studied lol. I made flashcards and quizzed myself. So when we got to the test today I knew all of it and I feel very confident about getting a good grade. At the end of class we let the people that didn’t get to present there storybook projects to present them today. I really loved their presentations. It was nice getting to know them and watching their journey in life so far. My overall day was pretty boring honestly. I did light weights in weight training though so that was kinda fun, felt the burn though lol. But other than that school was decent today.

Today in class we presented presentations on our own storybooks. It was really fun and intriguing to listen to everybody’s life story and challenges. It was nice getting a deeper understanding to the people in this classroom. It also made me realize that my at home events weren’t as bad compared to everyone else’s so I didn’t really have to feel bad. It was nice learning about everyone’s different cultures and fun hobbies they like to do. Such as Lucy liking to do theater and Alaynah liking to sing. This lesson taught me a lot, to even pay attention to my own life and disagreements at home. To better my relationship with my parents. Today’s class was overall very fun. It was also nice o learn about the other students like Able and Getahun who are also Ethiopian like me. And how I’m not in tune with my Ethiopian side. So it was very nice to learn quite a bit about our culture.
